Image Extended / Long Description (LONGDESC) Text: The territories obtained by the United States were through purchase, grants, or conquest. On the east coast are the 13 original colonies, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, were obtained via cession from Great Britain in 1783, with statehood granted several years later. Tennessee, West Virginia, Ohio, Alabama, Missisippi, Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconson, Michigan, and parts of Minnesota were obtained over a period of years in the early 1800s. The Louisiana Purchase made in 1803 included territory in the central part of the current United States. The territory comprises several modern states including Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. In the southeast, territories from Spain were obtained in 1819 which include Florida, parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Other territory to the west, include modern states such as Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and California were obtained from Mexico, Spain, and Great Britain between 1819 and 1853. The current state of Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. Hawaii was annexed in 1898. The Virgin Islands were purchased from Denmark in 1917. There are several other territories such as American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico are addressed by this map. A small inset map of the Globe shows the position of the United States in relationship to other countries and oceans.

Please note, this map does not attempt to address the various injustices imposed upon Native American people or others. It simply displays the dates, geographic regions, and well know titles associated with events.

Areas not shown include Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and other outlying islands, former territories.
